Back from vacation

Sorry for the blog absence! I am back from a much needed break. Freddy and I drove down to NY and then to my parent's house in Pennsylvania. We spent most of our time in Brooklyn biking around, eating yummy food, and visiting friends.

For those of you who don't know the whole story- my parents used to live in Brooklyn but they decided they wanted to be "one with nature" in their ripe old age. So now they live in a log home in the middle of the woods.  The area is mountainous and there are lots of evergreens. It was a great way to end a busy NY trip.

Freddy and I had an awesome time there...we sat by their fireplace, drank fresh water straight out of a stream, and biked up a long treacherous mountain (not my idea). Freddy really likes a "challenge". I only do challenges if you get chocolate or a prize at the end. Ha.

My dad says this little house is for geese.

Vintage by the pound

I went to this giant clothing recycling warehouse the other day with Elaine, Angie, and Marc. It was just 20 minutes outside of Montreal...in an area called St. Hubert. I found lots of men's shirts and Angie found the perfect wedding dress there, for $5!

This warehouse was one of the craziest places I have ever seen! Floor to ceiling crates of clothing, two floors of workers sorting by category, literally TONS of clothing. I knew people used a lot of clothing, but seeing it all like this was jaw dropping. Think of all the clothing that went straight to the landfill!

This warehouse sends 90% of it to third world countries, where it's resold again. It's so crazy to think that most of our clothing is made in China, then shipped here, then shipped to it's retail location, then it's shipped to Africa. Uhh yeah... that's why I love the shop local feature on Etsy!

Here are some pics from that day (stolen from Elaine):

SHOES!

Wedding time!

Afterwards, we got some junky food....yayyyy. I usually eat really healthy so sometimes it's awesome to eat crap! Elaine and I had a pineapple and anchovy pizza. Hehehehe I know, you probably think it's gross...but we're weird like that.

Vintage bedsheets

I've been amazed at the wide array of beautiful vintage bedsheets I've been finding in Montreal thrift stores. It's like the general public of Montreal had really great taste from 1965-1975, and then something went terribly wrong. (You should see some of the ugly 80's stuff) Must be something to do with Expo '67?

Usually, if the sheets are queen size, I usually keep them to use as, duh, bedsheets, and if they're twin size I use them as fabric. The patterns are so pretty...why don't they make stuff like this anymore?!?

Here are a few of the latest designs I made using vintage sheets:

Cat t-shirt

I ordered a t-shirt on etsy a little while ago and just got it in the mail yesterday. I love it! I don't have enough cat themed clothing in my life...

It's made by a small company based out of San Francisco...check them out! Coma and Cotton on Etsy

In other news, it's Saturday night and as usual, my boyfriend and all of my friends are still at the bar and I'm already at home in my pj's. Yep, I pretty much hate everything most 25 year olds love, but I've come to accept myself for it.

I came home, took a shower, and used this awesome home-made body scrub that Geeta made. It's made with sea salt, natural oils, chamomile flowers, and lavender essential oils. Smells amazing! I'll try to get the recipe and post it here...

I may be a loser, but at least I have freshly exfoliated skin. :-)

Vintage find of the day

I scored this awesome vintage hanging lamp at the Salvation Army today! Best $2.99 I ever spent.

Here's a pic of the cats checking out my new lamp.

My three seconds of fame on the CBC

Montrealer reporter Geeta Nadkarni does a really great segment on the CBC called "Be Green". They interviewed the store La Gaillarde a few days ago and videotaped me sewing a skirt out of a men's shirt. You can catch a glimpse of me sewing, hehe!

Check out the video here:

Also, check out Geeta's blog. I find it really interesting, she debunks a lot of greenwashing myths and also comes up with great suggestions about eco-friendly options in the Montreal area.

Video fun time!

Sooo...I've been playing around with my new Macbook...and I made this little video on iMovie. It's basically just some clips from the photoshoot a few weeks ago. Excuse the cheesiness/bad quality...I'm still learning!
